X can be any heavy hitter (BH, HM, GR, HWM are all decent choices). Something like Ves/Jes/X/MaA is fairly typical. There's lots of configurations that work fairly well. In the boss fight, he can protect whomever has the bomb and minimize the damage you take. AND he gets two actions per round? Who programmed this sadistic ♥♥♥♥? Honestly. I lost two heroes from heart attacks (as they got afflicted despite starting with low stress for the quest), and a third additional one for abandoning the quest. It has appeared for me three times now and this last time was a total ♥♥♥♥ off. I can do fairly well for most champion quests, but I cannot for the life of me survive Wolves at the Door.
